There is one really crucial New Year’s resolution dog lovers need to make today. So says Derek Collinson, founder of the world’s first and leading dog lovers dating site www.doglover.biz. He continues and that is never date someone who is not a dog lover because he believes one way or another the relationship will fail.

Why so? Well he believes that only fellow dog lovers really understand what it’s like to love dogs, to feel that special connection and it’s important for them to share this passion. Apart from the bond we have with our children there is no other as strong as the bond between a human being and their dog.

And he can draw on his own personal experience of such matters since his first dog Monty died at just four years old and he felt absolutely devastated - like he had lost a son. Then later when after a divorce he was starting out again he met someone on one of the big mainstream sites who said that she ‘didn’t dislike dogs.’ Although slightly worried about this cagey remark he thought what the heck only to be insulted soon afterwards when she complained that his house smelt doggy! Well that’s the kind of catty remark you can expect from someone who ‘doesn’t dislike dogs.’

Anyway the fact is that all houses where dogs live smell doggy! This of course is not an issue for a fellow dog lover in a similar way that having garlic breath is not an issue for your date if you shared the same garlic laden dinner.

The other problem with dating non dog lovers is their pathological hatred of dog hairs on their clothes which basically means they’ll never go near your dog (no bad thing) for fear of having their clothes contaminated. Of course dogs can sense when they are not loved and react in one of two ways both of which are potential deal breakers for you and your new found amour.

Some dogs will make a habit of jumping up pretending that they really like your new friend but really trying to scare the living daylights out of them. These dogs could teach Prince Machiavelli a thing or two! Others are just blatantly aggressive and will try to chew their ankles like they do with their favorite bone - well at least they’re honest! Either of these scenarios is likely to result in an ultimatum along the lines of either the dog goes or I go. Of course this kind of ultimatum can only have one possible outcome when given to an avid dog lover. So whoops there goes another promising relationship.

Occasionally the relationship may survive the first encounter of the doggy kind. Then let’s say you take your dog and your new date for a walk in the park. It’s a bright sunny day, the sky is blue and the birds are singing then all of a sudden your dog needs to go and you being a responsible citizen or at least not wanting to pay a $1000 fine gather it up in your little bag. Your date now traumatized by this grossly repugnant act seems to have developed an aversion to holding not just the hand holding the poop bag that they were holding a few seconds ago but your other one too.

If you’re lucky (very lucky) your date may think you’re a responsible citizen by collecting your dog’s poop in a bag and taking it home with you.

But just in case you’re starting to believe that you could date someone who doesn’t dislike dogs this final scenario may make you change your mind.

Imagine you have invited your date to your place for dinner and you are just sitting down to enjoy the fruits of your labors. Suddenly your adorable pooch empties the contents of his stomach all over the dining room carpet right there in front of you. Do you think any self respecting ‘I don’t dislike dogs’ person will want to be part of your family after this? No didn’t think so.

And that’s why all avowed dog lovers need to make a New Year resolution today - to only date fellow dog lovers - end of story!
